I've heard about it before, but what exactly is the Shopper's Special? When does it run? Where does it run?

I don't live in CT with their pricey fares, any answers would be nice. Thanks.

Shopper Special(i think i am correct if not someone on these boards will lol)means expanded peak hour type service mainly on the New Haven Line during the holidays from Thanksgiving weekend thru Christmas and ending on New Years Day. It means that instead of trains running to/from New Haven having 60-minute headways weekends, on Saturdays they run every 30 minutes usually i think from about 7am-3pm towards NYC and from 12 Noon-8pm towards New Haven.

Also the Hudson Line and Harlem lines also add extra 'express' trains to/from Grand Central during the Christmas Season Holidays too. Usually for example to/from Poughkeepsie and to/from Southeast/Brewster they add 'super express' trains running non stop departing either Brewster or Peekskill say at 10am and 12 Noon towards the city and about 6pm and 8pm leaving GCT.

Hope that answers your question Motionboy.

With the release of the Fall/Winter timetable there are extra trains on weekends that run AM to NYC PM to New Haven to accomadate the extra travelers into the city. They run mid-November until Christmas.

The "shopper's specials" start the week before Thanksgiving until early January.

There mainly on the NH line; on the Hudson & Harlem line they run extra trains, but I don't think its called shoppers specials. As for the times (from what I remember of last year):

Going towards New York there was a 9:25 & 10:25 that left New Haven, made a stop in Bridgeport then went express to 125th & GCT. From around 11:00-2:00 or 3:00 there were trains every hour from New Haven that stopped at: New Haven, Milford, Stratford, Bridgeport, Fairfield, Southport, Westport, then express to 125th & GCT. I think the last one of the day might have stopped in Stamford. There was also a really early morning train that went straight to GCT from Danbury. As for northbound: All midday from about 3:30-7:30. There was a train to New Haven that made the first stop in like South norwalk then Westport, Fairfield and local to New Haven. Along with that there was also one evening straight through train to Danbury from GCT, a couple trains to Harrison, and my personal favorites at 4:58, 5:58, 6:58 & 7:58(??). First stop. Fairfield.

These ran from the 2nd or third Saturday in November- December 31, though they should be running year round, especially the express trains.

Agreed 100% buddy. At least have the Christmas season "shopper sppecial' run on Saturdays for the very busy New Haven line.

Off topic. Why does the Stamford Local have 30-minute headways on Saturdays till 8pm when i often see 'empty' trains on portion between Stamford and New Rochelle?

Thanks everyone anyways Bridgeport - NYC Exp must own! Plus, it's for a fraction of Amtrak's prices! \:D

After taking the locals from Cos Cob-NYC a lot now, it does pick up a lot of people in Port Chester, Rye, Harrison & Greenwich & drops off a lot of people in New Rochelle & Mount Vernon, but I agree if anything on the NH line should have 309 minute headways it should be the upper portion, not the lower portion. If you take an early mornoing train (anything right after peak ends to about 11:00) you can't get a seat in Bridgeport, but on the lower portion only the first 2 or 3 cars are somewhat crowded.

That train was awesome. The 8:14 into GCT (Stamford then GCT) isn't too bad either and going home my favorites are the 4:35 (Grenwich, Stamford, Bridgeport), 5:01 (SoNO, East No, Westport, Fairfield, Bridgeport- even though it makes more stops at least it skips 125th & Stamford), 6:29 (expressz to East No, local the rest of the year- like the 5:01 it skips Stamford & SoNo) the 5:35 (express to Fairfield), & the 8:04 (SoNo, Westport, Fairfield, Bridgeport). I'd put the 5:16 on here as well (Stamford, Bridgeport) except since it only runs 5 cars you don't get there by 5:05 you ain't sitting, so I normally skip it and wait till the 5:38.

A car shortage could delay adding additional service. The M-2s have about only two-thirds of the fleet avaiable on a given day so until the M-8s arrive in 2011-12 service will remain as is.

Lots of people use the Stamford trains between Fordham and Rye for Playland. Others even go between Fordham and Mount Vernon or New Rochelle.

I am not saying 'no one' takes the Stamford trains. In perfect world both the New Haven local(Stamford)and express(New Haven)should have all trains running every 30 minutes or less 7 days a week until at least 9pm.
All i am saying is that 7express and myself agree that the MNRR on weekends sould have the 'express'(New Haven)trains w/ 30 minute headways instead of the Stamford since the MTA has limited eqipment and money at moment.
Riders in places like New Rochelle and Mount Vernon could use the Westcheser Bee Line buses to travel between those two towns as alternative. In Bridgeport on other hand there very little local bus service on Sundays to travel to say Norwalk or Stamford.

You forgot about Fordham, unless express trains stop at Fordham (and Rye in the Summer), you will also be cutting New Haven service to Fordham on Saturdays.

On Sundays most main line stations have 60 minute headways anyway, the extra trains only run on Saturdays anyway so the comment about buses at Bridgeport is irrelevant on Sundays unless MNR can afford to increase Sunday service as well.

It would cost more money for MNR to run the Stamford trains as expresses to New Haven anyway.

Greatone was suggesting ways to increase service on the New Haven line on weekends but costs prevent that from happening until the M-8's arrive.

Actually I said that extending existing Stamford trains to New Haven and turning them into expresses would cost more money. Anything will cost more $$, it's just a matter of how much...

Huh ? Harlem line trains last time i looked cant go to New Haven. Unless you want to rebulid some old rr tracks near Brewster and extend it to Danbury lol.

What they should do is make the second locals at 37 after the hour semi expresses. I wouldn't mind a train with this:
GCT
125
Mt. vernon
New Rochelle
Rye
Port Chester
Greenwich
Stamford
SoNo
Westport
Fairfield then local to New Haven

That way all the major stations on the line get service every half hour. Do trains really need to stop @ Cos Cob every 30 minutes??

Edit: with this setup we have: the NH locals at 07 after the hour, 3 minutes later the Stamford local & finally at 37 we have the above. I think thats reasonable, even though people who commute from the city to New Haven (yes there are some surprizingly) would hate to get stuck on this train.

90% of the people that use Fordham are going to Mt. Vernon, New Rochelle, Port Chester, or Stamford. Only a handful are going north of Stamford. Not enough to have the express stop there, plus it can't stop everywhere.
