I havent rode the J in about a week or two, but I heard that they put the R160's on the J and returned the R160's to the Z that were operating last winter. Can anyone confirm this and tell me when it started if it did, or when it will happen if it has not? How many are expected and/or are currently operating on the J and/or Z?
Yeah, the R160s are definitely back. I last rode the J back in late June and didn't get an R160, but when I was walking past Broadway with my sister to go visit her friend in Bushwick, I noticed one on the tracks overhead.

I read on subchat that there are about 6 sets of R160's on the J now. Once a train set has passed some kind of test they have to take, they are going to go into service immediately. IF you are a fan of the R42's on the J, you must ride them NOW cause their days are numbered. It's bittersweet. The R42's on the J are awesome and it's sad that they are going but it's also great that they are getting brand new cars for once. I can't wait to see how the R160's look on the J.

The R160s hit the J on August 4th. There are 5 sets on the J right now, and one on the Z. Once a set of R160As are delivered, they are linked up (they're delivered by truck so they are sent 4 at a time, individually) and enter burn testing. This is just testing the brakes, speed, etc. mechanics of the car, and then it enters service. More sets will enter service on the J as more come in.
Two days ago (the 6th) I rode a Z form Broadway Junction to Jamaica Center and I saw 3 R160 J trains go by in the opposite direction.

Maybe now the J will actually come. I mean, the J seems to take forever to arrive, sometimes I can be waiting for it for a long long time. With new cars maybe the J will have better efficiency and the Z can run more trains because it is only electronic to change the route destination.

New cars do not mean better service. The J was better run when it had R9's and R30's! What counts is how service is scheduled and whether or not the line gets you to where you need to go.
I remember the old QJ and KK lines as well as the RJ. Let me stop; I have to wipe a tear from my eye.

I just saw two today at around 4:00 p.m. on the Williamsburg Bridge! Didn't catch the car numbers.
One was signed: J BROAD ST, J NASSAU ST LCL The other was signed: J JAMAICA CENTER, J NASSAU ST EXP
The leads me to a question: when do they consider the (J) the "Nassau St Express" -- when it is running skip-stop with the (Z) or any time that it runs express between Myrtle & Marcy Av?

Is that the only reason that they consider the (J)(Z) to be the Nassau St Exp? I'm wondering because, as mentioned above, I saw some (J) trains with "Nassau St Exp" on the sign and others with "Nassau St Lcl" on the sign. How do they decide when to sign it local or express? I always assumed that it was express either during (J)(Z) skip-stop hours or weekdays when the (J) runs express between Marcy and Myrtle.

Yeah the Manhattan segment really has no true 'express' service, but the Broadway el segment is the only part where it runs express. However, it would confuse riders with the other BMT Broadway express being the N/Q.

I've seen several R160 (J)s. The two times I usually see them are taking the (J) right at the start of rush hour (when I use the J, I usually catch the last J before J/Z skip-stop service begins) or taking a walk on the Williamsburg bridge at around 3:00ish.

I normally see the J run with R160's on the weekend and at night. They run full times, but I think that when htey reduce service at night and weekends, they reduce the number of R42's not R160's, so you would have a better chance of catching one during these times until the line is all trains of R160 consist.
