A thread to discuss possible ideas to improve service on the (7). This is one of the best lines in the city but still can be improved upon in many ways. I didn't post this in EE's thread because that thread only talked about the eastbound extension.
1) Scrap the Westbound extension I'm all for subway extensions but we need to prioritize here. We have five ongoing capital projects, none of which are fully funded. Funding isn't on the way either, not to mention the 10th Avenue Station.
2) ATS/CBTC CBTC will remove unnecessary timers and add extra track capacity. This way you have the extra trains running on both the local and express which can reduce crowding.
3) Add R142As to the line Basically, switch cars with the (6). The main reason I would do this is that its more cost-effective to hook up newer cars that will last longer with CBTC. Also, this will relive SOME confusion at Queensboro Plaza during the PM rush.
4) (one decade later) Consider an Eastbound Extension along Northern Boulevard There are many obstacles to this plan. Bayside is full of NIMBYs and the fare control is in the way at Main St. However if this plan can go through it may create a more efficient terminal to turn trains around. Speaking of terminals...
5) Improved terminal activity At both terminals, as soon as a train pulls in and a T/O leaves the end of the train, another T/O will enter the other end of the train to get that train out of the terminal ASAP. This will require more crews and more money but will improve train service and capacity.

u think they are going to take away new cars from the lexington ave local to give to flushing riders thats insane the 6 is the premiere line on the irt and will continue to get teh best of everything the 7 is a queens throw in they dont care about the 7 like the 6

It is possible, R142/As for the 7 have been heavily discussed since it was found out that CBTC would be installed on the 7. And the MTA does care about the 7, hence the line manager program...

Not really. The 6 got R142As in 2000 because it ran 10-car trains, not odd 11 cars. The IRT Main Line also historically has been given priority over the 7 in new car improvements, though it may change.

And I'm one of those 6 train riders who would be screwed if they switch 142A cars with the 62A's. The 7's been using the R62A's for around 6-7 years now. Either upgrade them with LCD's or leave them as they are but I shouldn't have to lose out as a 6 train rider because people on the 7 can't figure out what train they are on.

Well, it's now rumored that the R188 will be ordered exclusively for the 7 line, and if that is implemented then there's no more of a need to transfer the R142A to the 7.

Well it makes more sense to give the 7 new trains in 15-20 years rather than to give them second hand R142/A's. But if they were going to give the 7 new trains then they may as well make the cars longer so they wouldn't need an 11th car and just run 10-car trains. The 7 is isolated from the rest of the IRT, there's no need to have it keep swapping cars from the mainline. IMO.
I guess the R62A's could go to all other lines that needs extra support or could replace the R62's on the 3 line which are not in the best of shape from the years they served on the 4line
I support an eastbound extension, as far east as you can before leaving NYC (Little Neck). Use 3 track subway, then convert to 3-track elevated east of Broadway LIRR. Express stops at Francis Lewis and all LIRR Stations.
NO Westbound extension.

Do you have at least $10-15 Billion Dollars my friend? Not to mention the strong oppisition from NIMBY(Not in my backyard)crowd who will block any form of construction.
A better 'alternative' could be a light rail (or BRT)along Northern Blvd between Queens Plaza and Great Neck LIRR station to replace the Q-12 and Q-66.
