I know the stations north of 125th could use some renovation. But I really like the 1 in Upper Manhattan. It cruises almost at express speeds. I just took it from Marble Hill to 125th, just before 6 am, and it ran at more than 7 blocks per minute. South of 96th, the 2 and 3 only achieve that speed sometimes, and they have considerably longer interstations.
The interstations are relatively long, the route is mostly straight and level, and there is too little crowding for the obscene dwells experienced further downtown.

as was said, the distance b/w manhattan's north-south blocks & bronx's north-south blocks are shorter....
and even if, in your logic, you're not taking into account, the broadway bridge b/w 225th & 215th... it's not 10 blocks.. it's nothing more than a difference of 10 b/w the block names.... ---------------
secondly, yes, service along the 1 has gotten much better.... I was gonna say the same thing Apple2Apple said... I also think it has a lot to do w/ the discontinuation of the 9... and that skip-stop service nonsense....

I grew up as a kid on the #1 line and remember it being very proficient and reliable. The one thing I don't like about the #1 is how it switches off/on the centered track at 103/96th and 145th/157th Sts. It appears to have been under built in many places and that is very sad. Because the potential of such a straight line could have been an even greater draw to passengers. Other than this flaw, it provide a great service to this area. It balances out the ridership b/t the IND. And because of this simplicity, other lines doesn't interfere with it service.

The only downside to the 1 north of 96th St is the depth of stations in Washington Heights that require using the infamous elevators to exit the station.

I always wondered why 125th is like that. As in why not continue strait across rather than to turn north to where 128-129th is. So really 137th to '125th' is what about 4-5 blocks then?
Originally, 125th was straight, and there was a street running diagonally from St. Nicholas to the Hudson, called Manhattan Street. If you look at nycsubway.org's old maps, you'll see that the stop between 116th and 137th used to be called Manhattan, not 125th.
In the urban renewal era, the city built General Grant Housing, which required closing 125th Street between Amsterdam and Morningside Avenue. In order to prevent a major street from becoming discontinuous, the city rerouted 125th Street through the old Manhattan Street, and renamed the parts of 125th west of Amsterdam LaSalle.

I would go with option 2: the (1) train all the way!
The ride from Penn to Marble Hill on the (1) is about 35 minutes.
The ride from Penn to Washington Hts on the (A) is about 20 minutes, and the ride from Washington Hts to Marble Hill on the (1) is over 10 minutes. Then you have to add in the time to wait for a second train (also note that A headways are slower than 1 headways), plus taking the elevator at 168 St from the (A) platform down to the (1) platform, and this option will take you at least as long.
Personally, those deep underground elevators (like at 168 St) creep me out and I try to avoid them.

I originally thought the first option would be much faster, but after reading this thread I wondered.
How about another option: (2) or (3) from Penn Station to 96th St to the (1) If all is well with the express, it'll pass 1-3 (1) trains before it gets to 96th St.

If all is well with the express, this should save you about 5 minutes minus the time it takes to wait for a second train (unless of course you are lucky enough to pull into an express station with a 1 waiting across the platform). But during rush hour, when the (2) and (3) are crowded and people are holding doors open, it may not save any time.
Princelex -- I still like your option better than taking the (A) to 168 St.
